This exhibition is derived from the book “New Chinese Architecture: Twenty Women Building the Future” published in March 2019.
The book and this exhibition are a celebration of the lives, achievements, and ambitions of a variety of female architects living and working in China today. Their practices demonstrate the variety of styles and opportunities available to them; from small-scale to mega-scale, residential and commercial, urban or rural developments.
Architects in China are keenly engaged in trying to understand the changing nature of this vast country as it has metamorphosed from a predominantly rural economy into an urbanized nation faster than any other country in history. Chinese architects are responding to real social and political changes, changes that are impacting on the way architecture and urban design is practiced.
The architects featured in this exhibition are those who have made a significant impact on the national scene: several are emerging talents in the architectural firmament, but we have also included one or two more established architects to indicate some of the continuity as well as the changes that have affected this country in the recent past.
In the exhibition, we examine the life and work of the founders, directors or owners of their practices. These are architects delivering important national and local construction projects. They just happen to be female. This is not a story about gender identity, but of architecture. This is not a celebration of their femininity, but of their talent.
We hope that the book and the collection of projects on display will go some way to highlight the incredible innovation and skill currently available in China. ”
